Hemsptead Dances Around Eyesore Hotel By David Winzelberg Friday, July 20, 2007
The Courtesy Hotel has been the bane of the West Hempstead community for more than a decade. But now that the hotel, the site of numerous arrests for prostitution and drugs, is a step closer to oblivion, many residents are opposing the Town of Hempstead’s efforts to replace it. Specifically, the residents take issue with a town rezoning plan that includes not only the hotel site but part of a nearby retail parking lot.
WHCA Delivers Letters and Petitions Calling for Closure and Sale of Courtesy Hotel
On Tuesday, April 17, 2007, a contingent of members of the West Hempstead Civic Association(WHCA) Executive Board and West Hempstead residents descended on Town Hall to deliver over 1400 letters and petitions, gathered in just 3 months, calling for the closing of the Courtesy Hotel and supporting the sale of the property to Trammell Crow Residential.
The WHCA asked the community to express their views and what they want developed on the Courtesy site. Most of the letters and petitions were the result of efforts started, after the WHCA General Meeting held on Feb. 28, 2007.
WHCA Executive Board Views Plans for Development of Courtesy Hotel Site
On August 31, 2006, the Executive Board of the West Hempstead Civic Association (WHCA) met with representatives of Trammell Crow Residential Developers. The Developers currently are in contract with the owners of the Courtesy Hotel. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss their plans to re develop the Courtesy Hotel Property. Rosalie Norton, president of the WHCA, said that the plan will require a zoning change from commercial/light industrial to residential and a request to increase density.
Town of Hempstead Adopts Blight Study for West Hempstead
West Hempstead Civic Association President, Rosalie Norton and Executive Board member Walter Ejnes attended the May 23, 2006 Town of Hempstead meeting. Each welcomed the extent of the Blight Study Area. They commented that the planned revitalization will create an entrance to our community which will reflect the attractiveness of our residential areas. The WHCA Executive Board will be meeting with TOH officials and developers to discuss proposals and to arrange with Councilman Ambrosino community meetings to discuss future development plans. It should be noted that at the Town Board meeting the attorney for the Courtesy said that the owner was in contract negotiations for the sale of the Courtesy.
The Friends of the West Hempstead Library Are Seeking New Members
The Friends of the West Hempstead Public Library urges all residents to become actively involved in the construction of our new library facility. No, you won’t have to bring the wheelbarrow to cart off debris or swing a hammer, but you can name a book stack or study carrel after someone you love. The Friends are about to go public with their Enhancement Campaign, seeking to supplement and expand the resources of our library.
This is such a unique time in the history of West Hempstead. Not only will the library itself offer expanded services and resources to our community, but it will revitalize that whole stretch of Hempstead Avenue. The new facility will also serve as a community center, with its very usable community space that will be sub dividable, allowing more than one community group at a time to have access. Due to the lobby design and elevator, the lower level will be available after hours and will be accessible to all. With resident participation in our Enhancement Campaign, that lower level community space can be transformed into a lobby gallery and community theatre.
We urge everyone to consider at least a membership to the Friends (you won’t want to miss some very special ‘member only’ events being planned for the months ahead), and encourage participation in the many naming opportunities available through our Enhancement Campaign. Individuals, corporations and community groups can all become a part of building a better West Hempstead Public Library.
The Friends of the West Hempstead Public Library can be reached through the library directly, at 481-6591, or through email at: friendswhpl@yahoo.com
Creation of New Empire Zone to Include West Hempstead (the following is a press release from Assmblyman Tom Alfano's office)
It was just last year at the “State of Elmont Address” sponsored by the Elmont Chamber of Commerce where Assemblyman Tom Alfano talked about his top priorities for the Elmont community and entire 21st Assembly district. The main plank of his speech was securing an Empire Zone for the area that would encapsulate parts of North Valley Stream, West Hempstead and Elmont. On Tuesday, that promise was kept when Governor Pataki and Alfano announced that Nassau County was the big winner in securing the zone for the greater community.
